Promoting Healthy Lifestyles and Green Energy Generators
Problem: 92% of students surveyed would like to be more active during the school day, and 88% of those students do not know how many calories are in their school lunches. We are honored to be the South Carolina state winner in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition. Our challenge is to show how STEM can be applied to solve a problem in our community. We chose to focus on obesity and sedentary lifestyles, particularly in the school setting, as this is an issue that disproportionately affects our state and community.
Our solution is to create a mechanical energy mobile device charger to provide a valuable incentive for exercise during the school day, and an Android app to track calories and exercise. As we progress through the engineering design process, look for more updates and links to our shared plans on this site! |
Week 1: Brainstorming, calculating calories and mechanical efficiency
Weeks 2-3: Using the design method and agile design to construct a prototype and Android app
Week 4: Refining Design and Presenting Solution
Week 5: Evaluating the Solution
We are currently working on refining our app file and cleaning up our technical drawings and plans to share- check back soon!
